The ultimate guide to

Laser hair removal

Whether it’s trepidation, nerves or simply the unknown, if you’re one of the thousands of people who haven’t tried laser hair removal, the experts at Natural Beauty are here to allay your fears and answer all of your most common questions. Just like any other advanced beauty treatment, it’s essential to do your research, so we’ll arm you with all the information you need that you’ll be wondering why you never took the plunge with laser hair removal before.

How does Laser Hair Removal work?

The way it works is that a light beam is passed through the area of unwanted hair. This light generates heat which is then absorbed by the pigment within the hair shaft and follicle. It is this heat that loosens the hair and disables the cells that create the hair.

Is it painful?

All our clinicians at Natural Beauty are experienced and highly professional, so treatment is carried out efficiently and quickly to limit any discomfort. Most people describe the treatment as uncomfortable rather than being painful, but it varies between individuals and depends on the area being treated. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you may feel nothing at all. Some people may feel a mild tingle or a heat sensation, but generally, the feeling usually is more intense when the hair is thicker or coarser.

Can anyone have Laser Hair Removal?

Whilst it works on all skin types, it may be that those with darker skin may need more treatments whilst those with light-coloured hair may find the treatment doesn’t work for them at all. Our Natural Beauty specialists are expertly trained in laser hair removal and will be able to assess whether or not you will be a suitable candidate for laser hair removal. Unfortunately, no form of laser treatment can be carried out to those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What if I’m on Medication?

Your consultant will ask questions regarding your medical history to identify any potential red flags, including if you are on regular medication. They will be able to advise you if there are any problems. You should also notify your consultant of any previous skin reactions you may have had through using products or from previous beauty treatments.

Is there any preparation that I should do?

If you have your first treatment booked, then there are some basic things you can do in preparation for your laser hair removal session. These include avoiding caffeine as it can make you more sensitive, don’t wax (it can make laser treatment ineffective), and wear loose clothing to allow your skin to breathe after the treatment.

When should I start treatment?

This really depends on your goals. You may be going away on holiday and want to get bikini-ready or are simply fed up with the mundane regularity of shaving. If you’re looking to have beautifully smooth skin for the summer months, it’s beneficial to start your treatments during the winter season when there is less exposure to the sun in between treatments. Whatever your goal, our specialists are on hand to talk you through a treatment plan tailored just for you.

How many treatments will I need?

On average, it takes between 6 and 9 treatments, but it really depends on your hair density, skin type, and the area being treated. The laser targets hair during its growth phase, but as your hair reaches this stage at different times, it means that several sessions are required to ensure every hair strand is targeted during this specific phase.

Are there any Side Effects?

Laser hair removal is considered to be a low-risk treatment, but as with all advanced procedures, there can be side effects. Your consultant will perform a patch test to determine the likelihood of any reaction and will be able to advise you on what a typical response is. There is usually some form of skin response after treatment, so some itching and mild redness can be expected within the first 48 hours post-treatment. Other possible side effects may include itching, irritation, redness, swelling, discolouration, burns and scarring. If you are worried at any point, always contact your consultant for advice.

What Technology do you use?

It’s always advisable to research where you intend to have your laser hair removal treatments. Seek out the technology and techniques used, the clinic’s accreditations and customer reviews. Natural Beauty uses Biotec Italia XLASE PLUS Laser platform incorporating IceSpeed and AlexPro technologies which is the most advanced TUV approved technology on the market. It’s a system that helps to cool and soothe the skin as the treatment is working, resulting in less discomfort, safer procedures, better results, and faster treatment times.

Are the staff fully trained to perform Laser Hair Removal?

It’s essential that wherever you choose to have your laser hair removal treatment, always make sure the clinic has experienced and well-trained staff. All our Natural Beauty laser therapists are level 4 NVQ qualified.

Is there any downtime following treatment?

It is advisable to regularly check the treatment area in the days immediately following your session. However, laser hair removal shouldn’t impact your regular routine. There are a few things you should avoid such as intense sunlight, scented products, extreme heat, chlorine, waxing and tight clothing for at least 48 hours post-treatment. However, your consultant will be able to advise you on the best after-care approach.

How much does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

While it may seem like a considerable expense, laser hair removal is a long-term solution for unwanted hair. When you start to add up the money you would usually spend on razors, hair removal cream and waxing, you’ll soon realise the money you can save by investing in such a treatment. Add on time you spend waxing or shaving, and laser hair removal becomes a very attractive solution.

At Natural Beauty, we can guide you through treatment plans and answer all your questions during one of our laser hair removal consultations. With no pushy sales staff, you can be relaxed in our comfortable clinic while one of our specialists talks you through everything you need to know, including both pre and post-treatment advice.
