Microneedling: Ultimate Guide to Microneedling

If you’re one of many who’ve heard of microneedling but haven’t taken the opportunity to experience its benefits or perhaps you’re curious about the treatment, then look no further. Here at Natural Beauty, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to this mysterious-sounding cosmetic treatment to supply you with everything you need to know, including what it is exactly and what to expect.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a beauty treatment that uses a hand-held device with very tiny thin sharp needles to make punctures in the skin. When your body feels these tiny punctures, it automatically triggers the healing process, resulting in rejuvenated skin through the production of elastin, capillaries and collagen.

Your aesthetician will use the appropriate needle length depending on your goals and where the treatment is applied. The needle lengths range from 0.25mm to 2.5mm, with the 0.5mm needles generally long enough to stimulate the collagen that reduces visible fine lines and wrinkles and generate skin tissue for firmer, smoother, more youthful skin. At Natural Beauty, we use the first FDA-approved microneedling device, SkinPen, that’s also CE and ISO-certificated.

What skin type is Microneedling suitable for?

Many cosmetic treatments on the market use chemical peels or excessive heat, making them unsuitable for some skin types. The attraction of microneedling is that it’s suitable for every skin type as skin heals the same for everyone, whether you have sensitive, normal or combination skin. Inevitably, it means microneedling is one of the most comprehensive beauty treatments available to anyone looking to improve their skin, with the procedure typically carried out on the face to treat wrinkles, large pores and acne scars.

How long do the results last?

After your initial treatment, you may see some initial signs of improvement within the first couple of weeks, with results lasting for four to six weeks. However, we recommend three treatments spaced 30 days apart to

see maximum results that can last anywhere from six to twelve months.

How often do you need Microneedling?

After your initial treatment has achieved maximum results, we advise ongoing maintenance treatments six to twelve months apart.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?

This particular treatment offers many benefits for your skin, regardless of skin type or colour:

  • Improves skin tone and elasticity
  • Eliminates acne scars and acne
  • Reduces wrinkles and fine lines
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation, or brown spots
  • Smooths scars and stretch marks
  • Tightens loose skin
  • Reduces enlarged pores

What to expect from Microneedling?

Before the treatment, your technician will apply a topical numbing cream to make the treatment more comfortable. Regarding how the treatment feels, some patients describe it as having sandpaper rubbed across the area. Indeed, during the procedure, your skin may become red and feel tight, feeling like you’re sunburned. This is all completely normal.

How painful is a Microneedling treatment?

The discomfort you feel will depend on the length of the needles used in your treatment. This is determined based on your goals and where the treatment is being applied. Usually, a topical numbing cream is applied pre-treatment to minimise any discomfort, but you can expect a mild sensation, with most clients feeling the vibration of the device.

What are the side effects of Microneedling?

The most common side effect of microneedling treatment is minor skin irritation, including redness, tightness, and itchy, dry, flaky skin, which can last for a few days without any additional complications. This is a normal response following the procedure.

What Aftercare should you carry out?

Once your treatment is complete, your skin will be more sensitive than usual. We recommend the following aftercare:

  • Avoid sun exposure
  • Avoid wearing makeup for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid skincare products containing retinol or alpha-hydroxy acids for the first three days
  • Stay hydrated
  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser
  • Use a high-factor sunscreen

If available to you and to help your skin heal further:

  • Use an antioxidant serum
  • Use collagen-stimulating peptides
  • Use a cooling mask

Is Microneedling worth it?

In a nutshell, the answer is yes. In fact, on the cosmetic review site Realself, 84% of those who’d undergone microneedling agreed it was worth it, citing results such as less acne scarring, more even skin tone and firmer skin with fewer fine lines.
