Microneedling: Needling your Way to Smoother Skin

Microneedling seems to be the talk of the town with dermatologists just about everywhere declaring how beneficial the treatment is. Ever wondered what microneedling is and whether it might benefit you? We answer some of the most common questions and highlight the pros and cons of having this minimally invasive procedure.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is the process of using a dermaroller that uses small fine needles to penetrate the skin. The needle lengths range from 0.25mm to 2.5mm, and the size used in your treatment will depend on your goals and the area to be treated. Generally, the 0.5mm needles are long enough to stimulate collagen synthesis in the skin and generate skin tissue for a firmer, smoother and more toned skin. The procedure is mostly used on the face to treat scars, wrinkles, and large pores.

How does it work?

Simply put, the tiny needles stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimising cellular damage, thereby generating new skin tissue and collagen. In a nutshell, it rejuvenates your skin from the inside out. There are three phases to this wound-repair process:

Phase One: Inflammation: Piercing the skin with the tiny needles activates your immune system. This response cleanses the wound, removes debris, increases blood flow and starts to create new tissue.

Phase Two: Growth: The wound is re-built with new granulation cells and a new network of blood vessels develops.

Phase Three: Rebuild: The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

Is Microneedling safe?

Microneedling is entirely safe for all skin types. Natural Beauty uses a device called SkinPen which has been clinically shown to be effective on skin types ranging from light to very dark. The process is also less abrasive than harsh peels, and with properly spaced treatment sessions, the procedure is also safe to be administered throughout the year.

Which Microneedling device delivers the best results?

At Natural Beauty, we use the SkinPen; the first FDA-cleared microneedling device brought to market. It’s also the first globally approved device with a C.E. mark and I.S.O. certification. SkinPen is clinically proven to improve the appearance of acne scars in patients ages 22 and older. In the clinical trial, 90% of subjects said they would recommend the procedure to friends and family. But don’t take our word for it, check it out at SkinPen’s Before and After.

How long does the treatment take?

Generally, a microneedling treatment takes around 30 minutes.

When can I expect to see results?

Your skin works reasonably quickly to repair itself so you could see some improvement in appearance within the first couple of weeks. However, after three microneedling treatments spaced 30 days apart, you can expect to see improvement in your appearance.

Is Microneedling painful, and what’s the downtime?

A light numbing cream can be used to minimise any discomfort, but generally, it depends on the length of the needles to be used. You can expect:

–    A mild sensation with most clients reporting only a slight vibration of the device

–    Post-procedure, you can expect the skin to appear slightly pink to red immediately after, which should reduce over 24 hours. Additionally, common treatment responses include rough skin, dryness, redness, tightness, itching, peeling, tenderness, discomfort, and burning. All these conditions should resolve over time without additional complications.

Is there any Aftercare I should perform?

Your clinician will apply a clean, non-cytotoxic hydrogel to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment and may recommend an aftercare regimen depending on your skin. In addition:

– You shouldn’t wear make-up for the first 24 hours after the procedure

– You should treat your skin gently for the initial three days post-treatment

– You can return to your usual skincare routine after three days

– It’s recommended to use a high factor sunscreen for at least the first two weeks post-procedure
